Statement
My work is based on close observation of the world around me. I like to find visual humor in situations, and draw on contemporary themes.
The compositions are often suggested to me by the the randomness of who is or has been in a particular space, and of what is left behind as a result.
MC Escher said, “We adore chaos because we love to produce order.” Painting provides me with the structure, tools, ability to play, and the challenge of problem-solving — organizing the chaos into a cohesive image.
Detailed shapes, vivid color, and paths around and through the space define my work.
Over the past few years, I have been exploring the iPad as a drawing and painting medium. As a long-time admirer of David Hockney, my interest was piqued when I first saw how he was able to use it to beautifully capture a moment in time. I use the iPad as a portable sketchbook, recording scenes that can be used in a later painting, or, just as often, its own medium that offers a multitude of possibilities.
